Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the right to question specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
