The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
