European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
